Dear Tooth Fairy

Miss Tooth Fairy, hey, I lost my first tooth today! It’s too bad, but I really lost it, as in, we don’t know where it is. I hadn’t even realized, but we were at the park and I was saying something to mama and she stopped me and said to open my mouth big. Turns out that the tooth came out without me noticing and it’s probably in my belly. Mama made some cookies before we went to the park and I ate a couple of them…

Mama said it should be ok, because you check kids’ blogs. So if you come by tonight and there’s no tooth waiting for you, I wanted you to know why. But for proof, I will show you these photos from this evening. Notice the small gap in the lower row. Wasn’t there yesterday!

It’s kind of weird, but I just realized the shirt I was wearing today was the same one that is in the photo below, that mama put up for my birthday post. I really do have a closet full of clothes and plenty of shirts.

Happy birthday, dear Ian

IMG_4034Happy birthday, Ian! I can’t believe you’re already five. It was so fun to see you so excited tonight about your birthday. I’m glad you’re so proud. To answer your questions from tonight, yes, you’ll still walk the same and talk the same. And no, you don’t stop riding in the car. But yes, you’re bigger. Unfortunately for me, you won’t ever stop growing up.

When you turned six months old, I looked at you and thought how quickly the time had gone. I realized that I only had 35 more of those 6-month periods with you before you became an adult. Never in my life had 35 seemed like such a small number.

Ian, you are the most amazing kid I have ever met. One of the main reasons I started doing this blog from your perspective was that it would prevent me from being able to brag about you every day, which I so want to do. Your passion, your brilliance, your love, and, yes, your “unbridled enthusiasm” – I have never known a child so overflowing with all of these.

So I am just going to take this time to usurp your blog and brag a little.

You love books, you love reading and you love learning. Your extensive vocabulary makes me smile, like when you choose to say “difficult” instead of “hard”, or you tell me that your head “went hurtling down” when I stopped the car fast. You don’t second guess yourself and are always looking for new ideas. Don’t lose that curiosity. Other kids ask why…but you ask “what if…?”

You aren’t really like other kids. Dad and I look at each other all the time and say “what kind of kid does that?’ There’s something that sets you apart. People who meet you – neighbors, other parents, your teachers – they always tell me that you amaze them. This isn’t something I’ve heard once or twice. It’s nearly everyone that takes time to talk to you. They are astounded by you…it’s your intelligence, your composure, your positive attitude. I wish I could take credit for it, but you are that spectacular kind of special that just turns up sometimes. All dad and I can do is provide you with opportunities to learn, help you see what you’re capable of, hold you to high standards, and make sure you don’t get trampled.

You are an unabashed mama’s boy. You come into my room in the morning and tell me I look beautiful. My heart aches a little whenever you stage a little marriage ceremony for you and me to get married. And when you slip your hand into mine for no particular reason. Thank you for all the kisses, for all the hugs, and for sometimes just wanting to be with me and nobody else.

I am also proud of the kind person you choose to be. You are not competitive (yet) and provide encouragement to those who need it. You don’t act with malice and there is no hatred in you. We have seen how angry and hurtful other people can be and despite being the object of that a few too many times, you still see only the good in people. When you’re grown, you probably won’t remember how L*** hit you, how you still called him your “mean friend” despite the regular bullying, and you probably won’t remember wanting to give him the Star Wars book that you made – because he loves Star Wars much more than even you do. And you won’t remember that you made me cry because I was so proud and in love with you at that moment. Even though you won’t remember these things, these times and so many others to come will all merge together to make you a strong and loving man.

Five years ago our world became a more beautiful place. From mom, dad and your baby Kai, happy birthday. We hope five is even more wonderful than you’ve imagined.

Everyone in our family got haircuts on Saturday! A lot of hair went into the trash this week. Kai’s haircut was his first one. He looks like a completely different baby now!

Here he is right before the trim…

and…get ready for the big reveal…

du du du duhhhh…

IMG_4613

TA DAH! Pretty sweet, huh? Just as cute, but less of a “hobo-baby” vibe. My transformation was nearly as dramatic as my hair had grown to a state of afro-puffiness. It’s amazing how much smaller our heads look when you take away all that mass.

And in other news, mama took some inches off her hair and daddy shaved his head. Yeah, the world is still turning.

Let’s get serious for a moment…

IMG_4329If you didn’t already know, mama and daddy are going to make my blog into a book for Kai and me. So we would really like you to add your comments to our posts, so we can have your words in our book, so we can read them when we get to be grown-up.

If you get our blog updates in email, you can make comments – first you need to get to our website, by clicking on the title, and then when you’re there and you see the post you want to make a comment about, you look for the link just under the post title that says “0 comments” (or maybe it will say “1 comment” or “1,000,000 comments”!) Scroll to the bottom of the page and there will be a box for you to write your note in. Or you can just get to our blog anytime by going to http://www.ian-davis.blogspot.com/

It will be so neat to have our book that has notes from the people that love us. Write lots and lots!

Kai is getting fun to play with. It’s like he’s getting to be a little kid. And the best part is that he wants to do whatever I’m doing. But the worst part is that he wants to do whatever I’m doing…

Here we are on a “discovery walk”. My music teacher gave me a magnifying glass and I was keen to go out and discover things. We went on a walk to the park in the woods.

He loves it as much as I do!

There’s a little stream down there that I like to throw rocks into. It was pretty muddy and my shoes were too big, so that’s a recipe for a muddy sock.

IMG_4069

Uh-oh! Had to pee! Why would mom be mean and take a picture of me with my pants down?

IMG_4073

another throw, and we’ll start walking back.

OK back home.

Dug out mama’s fur coat and don’t I just look fab?

IMG_4106

Mom, it fits me perfect.
I point – to the stars!

…and, just because this is cute…(thanks great grandma and auntie barb for the hats, which we wear all the time!)

We had a short post the other day on Kai’s birthday, but it was way short on pics. We’ll get more up, because there are a lot more to share!

Just me and some kitties and my friends

I love kitties so much. I think they are so cute. I wish we had one but daddy won’t let me. We had a kitty when I was small but it peed everywhere including in my toys so one day mama and daddy said enough and away went the kitty. So here I am, loving kitties and wanting and wishing for one.

When I’m grown up I’m not getting married to a girl, I’m getting married to myself. Then I’m getting a kitty and a skateboard. And I think apartments are pretty neat, maybe I’ll get one of those, too.

I have some best friends at my school, they are twins named Noah and Julia. The three of us do everything together. Their mama and my daddy make sure that we get to have lunch together after school at least once a week. It’s called Lunch Bunch and I like it a lot because it means I get to take my lunch to school and I get to stay there longer.

The three of us play together at school all the time. Our favorite game is when we play an animal family. We play monkey family, or coyote family, or sloth family, things like that. Noah likes to be the dad, so I let him. And Julia likes to be the baby, so I let her. So that makes me the mom. I am almost always the mom in our animal family but that doesn’t bother me. Noah let me be the dad one time.

Made by Space Age

I told mama today that she didn’t make me, I was made by space age. That’s right, space age. Because that’s where scientists come from, and I am a scientist. I ask people to call me scientist, and sometimes I come home from school with the name “scientist” on my papers. It’s fun and quite an honor to be a scientist. I’m all about science, you know. And I have mama be all about science too. A few weeks ago I told her I was going to turn her into a scientist, so she would be a smart girl. I got “the look” but was nonplussed. She took issue with the becoming-a-smart-girl part. I waved my drum stick around and said now she’s a scientist. Vwa-lah.
On another subject, we are very kissy around here. Kiss owies, kiss hello, kiss goodbye, kiss just for the heck of it, because we love each other. This week I was giving mama a kiss and then said I would give her a “real” kiss. I closed my eyes and turned my head and gave her a long kiss on the lips. Daddy said they were just glad I kept my mouth closed? I don’t know what that means.

Kai turned the big o-n-e this week. We had two parties, one Saturday and one Sunday. Kai got real cupcake, not homemade sugar free carrot and homemade sugar free tasteless real cream cheese frosting like I did. I don’t know whether to be jealous of him or what. It’s the blessing and curse of being a first kid. The blessing is all the free time that mama had to make me special things like that. The curse is that I had to eat crap like sugar free cake.
At any rate, sugar or not, he took a little while to warm up to the cupcake.

Hurray and a happy first birthday to my baby brother!

Mama says this means he's not a baby anymore, but he's not a big kid yet either. And guess what. It showed today for Kai's birthday. So the sky was celebrating too!

We love you and we're proud of you Mr. K!

How long???

IMG_3321

What? It’s been HOW LONG since I’ve updated the blog?

IMG_3319

So much has happened in the last few months. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas… lots of school, lots of quips and quotes, lots of hugs and kisses. Thinking about all of this stuff makes me feel like DANCING!

IMG_3324

I will be better about updating. And I will do my best to double back and retrace my steps over the last several months.

I will leave you tonight with some pictures and a video of my dancing.

IMG_3349

Mama’s been doing a ton of sewing. The latest creation was big soft hooded towels for Kai and me.

IMG_2999

IMG_3399

Dodo and Ninny were here for Christmas so they got to meet Kai for the second time.

IMG_3413

This is the stocking that mama made for Kai. But we’ll come back to Christmas stuff another day.

IMG_3431

I’ve been into vikings a lot lately, since seeing the Train Your Dragon movie. Santa brought me a viking hat for Christmas.
